Significantly enhanced antibacterial activity of Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibers synthesized by electrospinning

Undoped and Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibres were synthesised through electrospinning using polyvinylpyrrolidone and Ti tetraisopropoxide as precursors. The effects of Ag doping ratio (3, 6 and 9%) were determined. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that undoped and Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibres were polycrystalline with anatase phase. The effects of Ag doing ratio were examined using atomic force microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The average diameter of these nanofibres increased from 72 to 95 nm with increased Ag doping ratio from undoped to 9%. PL intensity decreased with increased Ag doping ratio. The optical band gap estimated from UV-vis spectroscopy decreased by 9% from 3.45 eV for undoped nanofibre to 3.20 eV for Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibres. The percentage inhibition adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria increased from 68.8% for undoped TiO2 to 90% for 9% Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibres.
