Physico-chemical properties of hybrid electrospun nanofibers containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), propolis and aloe vera

In this study, the effects of propolis and Aloe vera on physical, chemical and thermal properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) electrospun nanofibers were studied. For this purpose, propolis and Aloe vera were added to 10 wt% PVP in water-ethanol solution at different concentrations and used to fabricate nanofibers through electrospinning. The viscosity and surface tension of solutions were measured before spinning. Morphological and physicochemical properties of the prepared nanofibers were analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FTIR-ATR Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and tensile tests. Based on the results, increasing propolis concentration decreased both viscosity and surface tension, which was beneficial for the electrospinning process, though the average fiber diameter increased due to the adhesion properties of propolis. Propolis and Aloe vera components were dispersed in PVP fibers with no special molecular interaction between them. Tensile strength and modulus of PVP/propolis and PVP/propolis/Aloe vera fibers were lower than those of the pure PVP fibrous mat which may restrict their biomedical applications.
