TiO2 nanowires are fabricated by electrospinning on Ti50Zr alloy, by changing the elaboration conditions. The surface covered with nanowires is characterized by performing scanning electronic microscopy and contact angle measurements. The best surface from the point of view of nanowires organization is chosen based on experimental conditions. The electrochemical stability is tested in Fusayama saliva. The response of HGF-1 gingival fibroblasts cells is established and discussed. Cellular response is evaluated by the cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase test, nitric oxide level and interleukines IL-6 and IL-8 secretion. A very small increase of IL-8 expression was noticed only for the samples obtained at 15 kV, whereas for IL-6 no change compared to control was observed. This small increase could be related to the structural changes in the TiO2 semiconductor nanowires surface. Such data suggest that this alloy covered with TiO2 n-type semiconductor nanowires can be successfully used in biomedical applications without generating significant inflammatory processes.
